It took an in depth talk with Ma to consider going on with this journey. She reminded me of Glenn and how he needed me. It was for this reason and only this reason I went for the medical attention my doctor recommended.
Shelli and I were living together at the old farm house now after her divorce. We finally were beginning to get to know each other. Not on a sister level really, but more like pals. Seems her friends were not as abundant as they once were. So, we began to go out a lot. Times were hard on all of us as we try to find our way. But if they couldn't get hard enough Ma and me get into another argument and she advices me that her and Pa never wanted me. She said if they had abortion at the time I was conceived she would have aborted me. Well, this explains a lot !! But, it hit home for me. Was I crushed? Yes !! I couldn't believe what I heard and more so, how cold one person could be as a parent. She could have taken that to her grave. But now that I know, me and Glenn would leave. I packed a small bag for both of us and headed down the road. Not knowing where I was going but I couldn't be around Ma any longer. As we were walking, it was almost unreal, here comes Cliff. He saw us and stopped and picked us up. I explained to him what had happened and he thought we should go to Maine to meet his real father. For me, where else was I going? I had no plans other then to get far away from where I was. So, away we go. Maine......HERE WE COME....
The trip was long and as we arrived in Brunswick Maine, we got into a accident and ended up at the hospital to be checked to make sure all of us was ok. The vehicle was totaled. It was good that Cliff had many relatives in the area. We called his dad and he and his lady friend came to get us. WOW, did Cliff and his dad look alike. It was uncanny. There were even wearing the same clothes. Jeans and a red t-shirt. His dad was a roofer but an actual roofer not just a wanna be. I thought this would be good for Cliff to work side by side with his father. I would work with them both, yes, I am now roofing. I learned all about it. The money we were earning his dad kept aside for us to eventually get a bus ticket back to Ohio. In the meantime we would dig for clams, eat lobsters and fish in the ocean. Oh, oh, we even played beano. Their version of bingo.
We went fishing and well I thought I caught Shamu. My pole was so bent over and the weight of what was on the other end felt like a whale. I reeled it in and, well I was new to fishing but I could tell right away that this was not a fish. I dropped my pole and ran and ran. Lost my flip flops along the way. LOL Then once I was to safe ground, I yelled to Cliff to tell me what it was. Not that I would have ever known but he said it was two horseshoe crabs in mating season. Ok then !!! So, I tried again. I caught two fish but they were the size of your index finger. No doubt the only two baby fish in the whole ocean and I caught them. LOL
I was proud of my catch though and put them both in a jar to take with me. I was now a fisher woman.
Cliff and I were doing well here and seemed to fall in love more then ever. We were in Maine for several months. But, now it was time to go back to Ohio. After all the roofing and masonry work we did we only had enough money for Glenn and I to take the bus. So, Cliff would hitch hike back while we took the bus. During the decision to go back to Ohio I called Ma, this would be months after I left and she was upset that she had not heard from me sooner. She said there was a young girl and child that were murdered just after I left and she thought it was me. Hmmmmmm, finding it hard to believe she would be concerned about me so it had to be Glenn she was concerned about.
It was so hard saying good-bye to Cliff. We hugged and cried and decided on a date and time we would meet back in Ohio in the county park. Giving him time to hitch hike back.
Sooooooooooooooooooo, we go back to Ohio. Wishing I could say, going back home, but there was no home for me. But, I was determined to make a home one day.
Love "Patches"
